Bring the change ..

Image
"Change cannot be given to you every time. You must bring the change."   These lines feel so great in one sense but on the other side of the coin, we often get to hear this from shopkeepers, bus conductors, taxi drivers, fruit sellers etc. Shopping Malls escape these lines through card payments or chocolates. The problem of getting change from vendors is really a fundamental problem in India. Many a times, we are bound to accept toffees in lieu of change. In this post, I shall describe a few funny incidents that happened with me for this "change problem". During my college days, a xerox centre near our college always used to offer chlormints instead of giving change. I had to accept their chlormints against my will on several occasions. Many of my friends also faced similar situation at the same xerox centre. The staff at the centre never returned the change to the customers. Being near the college, the xerox outlet used to have a huge rush of students almost the en

Pineapples with statutory warning

Image
Inspecting the pineapples, I asked the vendor "Are these sweet ?". He replied "Guaranteed sweet !". He went on to give a statutory warning - " If you are a diabetic, then please do not buy these". The guy is dangerously skilled at marketing !  I bought one and after eating the delicious pineapple, I am scared of actually contracting diabetes. The pineapple is really sweet and the statutory warning is justified. Please taste Cachar's own product - the sweet pineapples !

Combating Mathphobia - an advice to school students

Image
Don’t be afraid !! This is not another ‘supposed to be boring’ math lesson ! So please do care to read on. As a school student one is always expected to learn the three R's – reading, writing and arithmetic. Almost all people begin to develop a sense of arithmetic in their childhood. Yes, believe me – very few people suffer from dyscalculia , a condition in which the patient has difficulty in understanding numbers and their manipulations. Numbers actually fascinate us even in our ignorance. A child is happier with five chocolates than he is with only one chocolate. I am sure that arithmetic calculations must have been a fun during the early years in school but all of a sudden when the arithmetic expands to mathematics, students develop a commonly observed syndrome which we may call mathphobia , meaning fear of mathematics. Suddenly, mathematics starts using English and Greek alphabets too, as if the numbers weren’t enough ! But you need to accept these changes. At first, take them

Actual problems in virtual world

Image
The world has become more virtual these days, thanks to social media. It is quite difficult to distinguish between real and fake. Apart from this, most of us are least bothered about the possible consequences of likes, shares and comments in social media. Let us begin with a story. A boy challenged his friend to gather a crowd around him without speaking a single word. His friend accepted the challenge and went to an open space on the roadside and started gazing at the sky. Passersby saw this strange act but they didn’t care. Few minutes passed, the boy continued gazing and then people began to observe. A few more minutes later, there was a crowd of people all gazing at the sky! It is indeed very easy to mislead someone and in this age of social media it is even easier to mislead thousands and thousands of people at a time. We don’t think before we share, we don’t care about what we share but we just like, click and share. A massive portion of the users in social media are definitely l

Some lecture videos on Mathematics Olympiads

I have been associated with Mathematics Olympiads since 2011. I try helping students with olympiad related problems. During the lockdown of 2020, I had made several lecture videos for students aspiring for olympiads. These are avaiable in my YouTube Channel.
